The Swamp of Vutha Valignat

(DMed by David W.) The first part in the Heroes & Traitors campaign follows a group of adventurers out of Augusthaven and into the brooding swamp of Vutha Valignat to face off against the black dragon Verilis.

Prelude: “Augustkeep”[edit]

Date: SH 1310, February 30, Melorus

The beginning chapters of this campaign play out exactly like that in the official D&D published adventure "Keep on the Shadowfell," just with a few name changes. However, after the villain Kalarel was taken care of, the adventurers set off on another mission that is completely homebrewed. Their true adventure starts here.

Introduction: "The Swamp of Vutha Valignat"[edit]

Date: SH 1310, March 8, Corellonus

After the destruction of Kalarel and his cult of Orcus, the adventurers enjoy a grand celebration in Augusthaven. After a few days of talking with the townsfolk, they learn that there are more troubles to the northwest in the Swamp of Vutha Valignat. A group of hobgoblin brigands known as the Ularen have been raiding merchant caravans traveling along the Black Road through Vutha Valignat, effectively halting all trade going between [[Vutha Valignat#Augusthaven|Augusthaven and Spearsdale. On top of that, Evenhelm has been subject to repeated assaults by the dragonborn tribe called the Severed. The adventurers head along the Black Road toward Evenhelm to investigate the troubles in this region.

Notes: The local merchant of Augusthaven implores the adventurers to search for his good friend Relton Sturmley whom he thinks may have been captured by the Ularen brigands.

Episode 1: "Journey to Evenhelm"[edit]

Date: SH 1310, March 13, Iounus

On their way to Evenhelm the adventurers are ambushed by half a dozen hobgoblins of the Ularen, but they quickly overcome the raiders and make it to Evenhelm after roughly four days of traveling. They speak to Jherbin, the leader of Evenhelm and the chief of the Silver Scale, who tells them that they must find the hideout of the Ularen, whom the Silver Scale believe to be allied with the Severed, the enemy tribe of the Silver Scale. Perhaps they can find the location of the Severed base by investigating the Ularen.

Notes: The adventurers find Ogther, a drunken would-be hero who decides to join the party solely for the possibility of encountering violence and gore.

Episode 2: "Ularen Hideout"[edit]

Date: SH 1310, March 15, Erathisus

Following the notes of Silver Scale scouts, the party finds the Ularen hideout hidden deep within Vutha Valignat. After a massive battle, the heroes manage to slay the Ularen Chief Roak and find a letter from Nadaar that mentions the Lizardfolk Slavers and carries a map that gives the slavers' base location. However, the Severed base is not marked on this map, perhaps as a precautionary measure.

The adventurers collectively decide to find the Lizardfolk base in order to rescue any surviving victims and perhaps find Relton Sturmley.

Notes: The letter they find on Chief Roak also mentions a spy in Evenhelm. The heroes don't have any clue as to who this might be. More summary information will be added later.
